One True Love
MALINDA LO

Summary: When Princess Essylt was born, a soothsayer came to prophesy about her future, as is tradition in the kingdom. The soothsayer warned that should Essylt find her one true love, she will be the downfall of the king. Thus, the king has Essylt banished to a corner of the castle, so that no man will ever lay eyes on her.

The Angriest Man
LISA McMANN

Summary: When David was an infant, he was stung by a bee that held in its stinger the essence of the angriest man in the world. At least, that’s what his mother told him at age six before throwing him out. David doesn’t feel perpetually angry, but people seem to always think he is. When he turns 18, David leaves his foster home in search of a place where he belongs.

 Improbable Futures
KAMI GARCIA

Summary: Haunting story about a carnival fortune teller whose predictions start to come true.
"When I was six years old, my mom sent me to school for a month.  It was the first and last time I ever set foot in a real school."

 Death for the Deathless
MARGARET STOHL

Summary: This story had a little bit of everything: conspiracy theories, Nostradamus, prophecies about the end of the world, vampires, werewolves and the usual gang of paranormal creatures of the night, romance, mystery, you name it.

 Gentlemen Send Phantoms
LAINI TAYLOR

Summary: Each year, on St. Faith’s Day, girls of marrying age can bake a special cake that will bring the phantom of the man she will marry to her bedside. Three best friends partake in the ritual for the first time, and are surprised by the result.

 This Is a Mortal Wound
MICHAEL GRANT

Summary: Tomaso has never been a fan of school. When he gets the opportunity to move to San Francisco and try out a teacherless program, he is ecstatic. Unfortunately, one of Tomaso’s old teachers (one who hated him) follows him there and attempts to bring him back to traditional education.

 The Chosen One
SAUNDRA MITCHELL

Summary: Beautifully written original fairy tale in the vein of Gail Carson Levine's best! I particularly enjoyed the Roman influences on the kingdom and its mythology. I would have loved to spend a full-length novel in this world, and yet, by the same token, nothing felt rushed or lacking.

Homecoming

(Vampire Academy 6.5)

RICHELLE MEAD

Summary: A short story about Rose and Dimitri. A story about going home and finally facing the family he never thought he would see again. But will it be short lived as a dangerous Stragoi lurks close by and Dimitri must protect the ones he loves.

The Mind Is a Powerful Thing
MATT DE LA PEÑA

Summary: A gripping and somewhat alarming story about the overwhelming power of paranoia. Moral of the story: you need to not obsess about what can go wrong in your life, lest it become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Out of the Blue
MEG CABOT

Summary: When KC and Kyle were young, they were visited by an alien. This alien implanted recording chips into their arms that manifested as blue dots. Of course, no one believed little KC and Kyle. Years later, when KC writes a blog post about her experience—and it goes viral—the alien comes back.

Misery
HEATHER BREWER

Summary: Alek has been in the grayscale town of Misery for as long as he can remember. Each year, the townspeople receive a Gift from the beyond. This year, Alek’s Gift is something he never would have expected.

Burned Bright
DIANA PETERFREUND

Summary: Bright’s father is the chosen prophet—he has predicted the rapture and subsequent end of the world. Those who follow him will have a place in heaven. Bright, as the prophet’s daughter, has the strongest faith in the congregation. But when she awakens on earth after the rapture, Bright knows something has gone wrong.

Fate
SIMONE ELKELES

Summary: Bad boy meets perky girl who changes him. Very straightforward.
"As I step off the bus with my duffel, I stare at the sign across the street welcoming me to my new home.  Seaside Campground and RV Park.  I never thought I'd be homeless at the age of eighteen."

The Killing Garden
CARRIE RYAN

Summary: "They say my father wept at my birth.  Not from joy, but from agony that I was born a daughter rather than a son."
